shepherd fairey sits and talks with current tv
video after the jump.
2 of my favorite artists popped up onto my radar today through my RSS feed. shepherd fairey got profiled in the new york times. glen e friedman in video form from a talk he gave at sweettalknyc. i met glen once at a show at space 1026 and dude is a bit of a prick but i think his work speaks for itself and who am i to judge anyways? its interesting to see where artists that i have been following for a time now pop up within ‘mainstream’ culture.
trademark gunderson of the evolution control committee has come up with an awfully funny play on credentials. i hate showing ID and this is pretty ingenious play on the system and i think it might be a way to back up/legitimize much of my shit talking. tho for $20 i dunno. dude should just put the template up for download.
shepherd fairey, of obey giant fame, is redesigning the covers for many of george orwell’s most famous books. the publisher penguin books outlined it in a blog post recently. i cant think of anyone else that could rise to this kind of task. so many of orwells books fit perfectly within the current political climate along side shepherds prints. i hope he does a run of real prints with these as the focus.
Paul Simonon the bassist for the most important band on earth, the clash, has a solo art show opening this month in london with some saying his painitings could fetch close to $60,000USD. the guardian interviewed paul about many things, i compiled some juicy bits below as well as some recent paintings.
“The day before Strummer died, he sent Paul Simonon a text message. It said, ‘Come on, Paul. Give it a try. You might even like it.’ Strummer was referring to a possible reunion of the Clash for a one-off gig to celebrate their imminent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Simonon, though, was having none of it. ‘Joe was up for it, and so was Mick and Topper [Headon, the Clash's drummer], but I wasn’t,’ he says, without a trace of regret. ‘I was the one who always said no. In this instance, I really didn’t believe it was the right moment. A big corporate event like that, two grand a seat. Nah, that wasn’t in the spirit of the Clash, was it?’”
“‘That’s the thing about painting, it helps you work stuff out. It’s a way of making sense of the world, of yourself.’”
from his upcoming show “16th may anniversary”

from an older show called ‘From Hammersmith to Greenwich’ a piece called ‘The Thames from Millbank’

“Raymond Leblanc, the Belgian publisher that built Lombard into one of the great successes of worldwide comics publishing, died on March 21, according to wire reports. He was 92 years old.” here is a somewhat recent interview with leblanc. i loved the tintin books growing up. it was tintins curiosity and adventure that pushed me to venture further and further into the woods.
high snobriety sat down and interviewed andy howell recently. i got into andys stuff when a neighbor of mine in the 90s picked up a new deal andy howell deck. i thought the art was so bright and made such a statement it has stayed with me for a long time now. stoked to reconnect with this dudes art. its funny to see this artist that i loved as a kid and kind of fell away from following but didnt cos some of his ads in his portfolio i thought were cool thinking back…..
